I'm Colin Yap, an MEng Electrical & Electronic Engineering student who works across the stack — embedded systems, robotics, computer vision, and digital design. I like problems that start as an idea and end as something you can hold, wear, or watch move.
I'm a Year 1 MEng (Hons) student at the University of Nottingham Malaysia, and I've spent it building across as much of engineering as I can reach — mechanical assemblies, embedded firmware, control systems, computer vision, and digital logic. The common thread isn't a single field; it's that I like taking something from a rough idea to a thing that actually works.
That's meant a PID-controlled line-following robot with computer vision, a wireless robotic hand driven by a flex-sensor glove, a 3-axis claw machine, and a business card etched onto a PCB. Each one pulled me deeper into a different discipline — motor control, wireless comms, mechanical design, board layout.
Most recently I've been drawn to digital design, building a library of Verilog projects and working through hardware fundamentals from the logic level up. I keep everything open on GitHub and write up what I learn as I go.
A robotic hand driven by a wearable flex-sensor glove — an ESP32 reads finger bend and streams it over Bluetooth Classic to an Arduino Mega actuating the hand. Built and showcased at my university's Engineering Innovation Recognition Program.
A Raspberry Pi robot car — PID control for line tracking, with computer-vision experiments layered on using YOLO and OpenCV, organised around Python multiprocessing.
Arcade claw machine built from scratch — ESP32 driving NEMA17 steppers across three axes, with a G-code motion mode and a playable arcade mode. Assembly designed in Autodesk Inventor.
RTL builds documenting my digital-design learning — up to a UART TX/RX verified at 115200 baud on a 27 MHz clock, plus a direct-mapped write-through cache with its own testbench.
A functional business card laid out as a printed circuit board — schematic capture and board layout, with my identity etched onto copper.
